A girl with a face like eager flame who was dressed with a maddening perversity of wrongness, but who one day would undoubtedly hold the world in her hands for good or evil.

the things i do for love, thor/loki, a game of thrones au

the things I do for love

“You are both born to be kings,” says their father, “but the Iron Throne was made for one man, and for one man alone.”

-

“There is no such thing as magic,” says Thor, twelve and not as wise as he believes, and Loki, eleven, smiles the smile he’ll wear again, in front of a dozen armies, says, “I can hold hot coal and never burn, brother. There is such a thing as magic, or I am a dragon.”

“Dragons are magic,” says Thor, dismissive, and Loki shakes his head, says, “No, dragons are fire. Fire and blood.”

-

“You can hold lightning in your hands,” says Loki, thirteen, his eyes wide, and Thor grins, says, “There is such a thing as magic, after all.”

“So you say now,” says Loki, folding his arms, “but my fire magic, my ice, that meant nothing?”

Thor lifts an arm and the sky thunders, doesn’t answer, doesn’t even realise that he should.

-

“My heir, in all but name and now in more, blood of my blood-” says their father, but he is interrupted, there is a messenger with a pale face and burnt hair, and their father holds his staff and strides outside, and ten men die that day, four at their father’s hand, three under Thor’s hammer, and three from Loki’s knives, and Thor is the Hand of the King, but he’s not the heir, not yet.

-

“You led an army south,” says the Allfather, his voice low with rage, and Thor does not bend his knee, says, “They rode into your lands, Father, they brought a dragon-“

“They could bring twenty dragons!” hisses Odin, “They could freeze the seas and raze the earth, I am your King, and I commanded you to stay.”

“But Father-” says Thor, and Odin narrows his one eye, says, “You are a foolish boy, but I can ensure that you will be foolish no longer.”

-

“I am the Hand of the King,” says Loki, “and I want him dead.”

“But, my Lord-” says the Lady Sif, and Loki reclines on the throne, a circlet of iron around his neck, a circlet that ends in a clasping hand, and he merely touches his throat, nothing else, and she falls silent.

“If you ride in this land,” says Loki, “then, my Lady, you ride for me, and me alone.”

-

“I love my brother,” says Thor, “but he what he does here is wrong, and I cannot stand by and watch.”

“He will kill you,” says the Lady Sif, her hair hacked short, a scar through one eye, and Thor says, gently, “He will try.”

“He has the dragon in him,” says the Lady Sif, and Thor laughs, says, “Then what are we to do, my Lady? If fire cannot kill a dragon, my thunder shall fare no better.”

-

“Mine is the fury,” says Loki, “no longer is there an ‘ours’.”

“Your father-” says the Queen, and Loki shudders, says, “He was not my father.”

Do not speak of the Allfather with such disrespect,” says the Queen, and Loki smiles, sad, says, “I am the bastard of a mad dragonking and a Lannister icemaiden. My hair is black as night and my skin is white as snow and I am not a fool, my Lady.”

“You are my son,” says the Queen, every inch a Stark once more, just for a second, and Loki says, “I am Loki Lannister, and I am no one’s son, but I am King.”

-

“The King in the North,” says the Lady Sif, her hair a little longer, her scar a little less red, and Thor smiles, says, “I am Thor Baratheon, Odin’s son, and I am no king.”

-

“I love you, brother,” says Thor, “but you are not the rightful king.”

“And you are?” says Loki, twisting Thor’s lightning in his hands like water, “There is no such thing as rightful, brother, don’t be a fool.”

“I am no longer a fool,” says Thor, as he lifts his hammer, “how else would I know that neither of us should rule?”

-

“Be my Hand,” says Loki, his form flickering, and he’s solid but they both know that he sits on a throne a thousand miles south, his eyes closed and his hands tight on his knees, and Thor says, “You should not be here, brother.”

“We are both Kings, in our fashion,” says Loki, sitting in the snow, his feet bare, and he gives no sign of being cold, for the snow means nothing to him even when he is corporeal, “but the White Walkers are coming, and a fractured kingdom with warring rulers cannot hope to survive the storm that awaits us.”

“We should not do this,” says Thor, his hand on Loki’s shoulder, and Loki pulls Thor down into a kiss, says, “We should not do so many things, brother, but winter is coming, and it comes for us all.”

-

“Winter is coming,” says Thor, at his brother’s side, and Loki smiles up at him, his fingers playing over the metal of the throne, says, “I have no need of a dragon, brother, perhaps something a little more… down to earth?”

“If there is to be a lion in your kingdom, it should not be you,” says Thor, and does not finish, and Loki smiles again, says, “They will hear us roar across the earth, brother, for ours is the fury and winter is coming and our blood burns like darkice, for this world is ours, and ours alone.”

“I do this because I love you,” says Thor, his hand coming to rest, once more, on Loki’s shoulder, and Loki closes his eyes, says, “Well, one of us had to be the clever one, didn’t they?”

-

“I am the Hand of the King,” says Thor, a little wryly, sitting on the Iron Throne, as Loki kneels before him, Thor’s wrist against his mouth, “and I kneel to no one, not even you.”

“I said I was the clever one,” says Loki, glancing up, light shining on his silver crown, his eyes on the ring on his brother’s finger, the twisting hand, “for I did not ask, did I?”

-

Burn them all,” says Loki, with his Lannister smile, and Thor grips his hammer, Stark steel in his eyes, as Loki lifts his arm, his fire already engulfing him, and when they charge, they charge together.
